xeroderma pigmentosum
A rare genetic disease (autosomal recessive inheritance) in which afflicted individuals lack the enzyme responsible for the repair of DNA damaged by ultraviolet light. The gene for this disease is recessive, and people suffering from it are extremely sensitive to light and develop eye and skin abnormalities such as premature aging, skin atrophy, skin ulcers, keratoses and skin cancers and must be kept completely away from UV light.
