This is physiologic jaundice which occurs after birth. It is due to the normal turnover of red cells after birth or low level of glucuronyl transferase. It lasts about 1 to 2 weeks and is characterized by an elevated unconjugated bilirubin. Other types of neonatal jaundice could be due to medical problems, e.g. hemolytic diseases, enzyme deficiencies, and hemorrhage.
